Westonzoyland, Somerset - 29.9.09

A mid week visit to the airfield at Westonzoyland ( just East of Bridgewater ) found only 4 ultralight aircraft outside of their hangers.

These three were active

G-JAXS Jabiru UL 450 was built in 2001 and has c/n PFA 274A-13548 - it first flew at Kemble.

G-BYTR X'Air was built in 2000 and has c/n BMAA/HB/105

G-PEGE Skyranger 912 c/n BMAA/HB/479 was built in 2006 - there are approx 200 Skyrangers currently registered in the UK

Cyclone AX2000 G-MZJL was parked outdoors.

Westonzoyland is an interesting old airfield - today the old airfield is split by the main road. The ultralight and microlight aircraft operate from the NW part of the airfield not too far from the old 2nd World War tower.

The airfield opened in 1944 and hosted transport aircraft from both the RAF and the USAAF in the build up to the D-Day invasion and the push across Western Europe.

The Wikipedia website has a good history of this airfield - see link below

RNAS Yeovilton - Wed 21.1.09

A brief stop at RNAS Yeovilton produced these two images

Royal Navy Sea King HC4 ZF124 "L" of 845 Sqd - the low winter sun really shows off the details in the colour scheme. This Sea King c/n WA974 was delivered new to the Royal Navy in 1987 and initially served with 772 Sqd based at RNAS Portland coded "24.

When RNAS Portland was closed and 772 Sqd disbanded it joined the Commando helicopter fleet at Yeovilton. In recent years 845 Sqd have operated on deployment to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Sea King in the background is the very old XV676, coded "ZE" - this MK6CR aircraft is an old HAS 6 version and still has its float sponsons but has lost all its ASW kit and is now used as a flight trainer for the busy HC4 fleet, taking some of the hours off the frontline HC4 helicopters. XV676 delivered to the RN way back in 1970.

Hawk T1A XX198 is now almost 31 years old having been delivered to the RAF back in April 1978. I first saw it at RAF Valley in August 1981 when it was serving with 63 Sqd of 2 TWU coded "198" painted in green/grey camoflague.

Today it flies with the Royal Navy FRADU based at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall - some Royal Navy Hawks used to carry "Royal Navy" titles but these have now gone. It was busy flying circuits this morning using the local call sign "YEOVIL 61". FRADU usually have a couple of RN Hawks detached to Yeovilton and they operate from the old Sea Harrier apron on the south side of the airfield.

Halesland - Sat 15.9.07

Halesland is my local airfield being about 8 miles or so from my home. It is situated high up on the Mendip Hills between Priddy and Cheddar near the village of Draycott.

Busy scene with ASK 13 "EPP" BGA 2845

Another ASK 13 is the all orange "FVC" BGA 3550

Halesland is primarily a glider airfield, home to the Mendip Gliding Club - in addition it is also home to two powered motorgliders.

Fournier RF4D is a single seat motor glider based at Halesland

Scheibe SF-25C Falke G-KWAK has been based since 2003 and can be used to tow gliders

Elegant Slingsby Skylark "BKA" BGA 1019 photographed from the car park area

There is a visitors car park which offers a complete view of all activity - no facilities for visitors but the clean hilltop fresh air is free and blows your cobwebs away !

If you are in the area there are two good pubs in nearby Priddy too for a refreshment break.
